Lighting the Way: How Solar Power Is Saving Lives and Shaping Futures in Maji

In Maji, where the sun shines bright, but the power grid does not reach, darkness used to be more than an inconvenience — it was dangerous.

Thanks to the work of the Maji Development Coalition (MDC) and its local partners, solar energy is changing that story.

Since 2015, MDC has helped bring solar electricity to hundreds of homes, schools, and—most critically—a rural hospital that now serves over 60,000 people. That change is already saving lives.

Not long ago, Meskerem (a Maji mother) was expecting her fourth child and began to face serious complications late in her pregnancy. In the past, she would have endured a brutal five-hour journey over rough roads in the one local ambulance—whose suspension was shot. Women didn’t always survive the trip.

But this time, she didn’t have to go anywhere. Thanks to MDC’s solar installation, the lights in the Maji hospital were on, the surgical team had power, and she safely delivered her baby via cesarean section in her own town. Her husband later found Caroline and thanked her in person.

“Many women died on the road trying to reach a hospital,” town leaders told us. “Now many lives will be saved.”

MDC’s solar work hasn’t stopped there. In partnership with the Solar Energy Foundation of Ethiopia, the organization has distributed over 600 solar lanterns to schoolchildren in Maji—giving them light to study after sunset, and hope for the future.

During the lantern distribution, local leaders Samson and Markos told the children: “Study hard. Become nurses and teachers. Maji needs you.” Without job opportunities, many educated youths leave for the cities. But if Maji can raise and keep its own nurses, teachers, and leaders, the future gets a little brighter—one lantern at a time.

The same spirit of sustainable, locally led progress is at the heart of MDC’s newest effort: the Maji Women’s Development Center. We’re already building. With your help, we can finish strong.
