Building Income, Not Just Walls: The Economic Impact of the WDC

In Maji, opportunity often leaves with the bus. Jobs are scarce.

Most educated young people move away. And women—especially those with families—have few ways to earn income beyond subsistence farming or informal selling. The Maji Women’s Development Center (WDC) is about to change that.

Maji Development Coalition making Clean water, Solar Electricity and Women's Empowerment a reality.Yes, it’s a building. But it’s also an engine for economic transformation.

Here’s how:

Training for income-generating skills.
The WDC will offer workshops on small business development, financial literacy, and co-ops. They can learn trades like food processing or sewing—so women can earn steady income, right in their community.

A Center for the Self-Help Movement.
The leaders of women’s self-help movement will have an office. Town women will have a chance to organize and run co-ops inside the center. Rural women can consult and organize when they’re in town for market days.

A bank branch for Maji.
Banking has only this year come to Maji. Banks have been crammed into small existing spaces. The ground floor of the WDC will be the first space built to national standards for a bank. Banking  is a service long agitated for in the district—providing savings accounts, credit, and tools for economic independence. And the rent will provide income for programming and upkeep.

The WDC isn’t just about empowerment. It’s about stability. It’s about creating the infrastructure women need to thrive—economically, socially, and generationally.

When women have a safe space to learn, lead, and earn, the whole community benefits.
